As living organisms respire they take in carbon dioxide from the environment, including the isotope of Carbon "C". I should add that the C decays at a known carbon dating diamonds, so if you have a sample and have the ratio, you can work out how long you'd have to go back to reach atmospheric C levels It can't be used for a diamond because it is not organic.
Once an organism dies, the C decays but the level of C remains the same. They are both forms allotropes of carbon.
They also have a nasty tendency to decay into graphite, but that's another story. By either mechanism, this is essentially internal contamination. Eventually the problem becomes insurmountable.
